Effective treatment of patients with various health conditions requires an appropriate approach from the medical personnel. For example, there is a need for a comprehensive assessment of patients for the formulation of an appropriate treatment plan. Besides, the treatment schedule, plan, or regiment can greatly vary based on whether the patient has comorbid conditions or not.
The patient presented in Shadow Health is a seventy-two-year-old African-American female patient with a past medical history of chronic kidney disease. The patient currently presents with chest pain, nasal congestion, a productive cough, fatigue, and fever. These symptoms have been experienced for the last three days, and she has tried using aspirin but has not found relief. While she denies the use of tobacco, she indicates that she uses wine.
The patient’s current symptoms point to pneumonia, acquired outside the hospital, or community-acquired pneumonia. It is important to explore the pathophysiology. The pathophysiology of this kind of pneumonia involves both microbial virulence and host defense factors. Continuous exposure to contaminated air and frequent aspiration of nasopharyngeal flora makes the lung susceptible to infection (Zambare & Thalkari, 2019). The infection can take place in two ways.
A patient acquires pneumonia through inhaling microorganisms suspended in the air since they can evade the defenses of the local host. The infection can also result from aspiration of oropharyngeal flora. The patient’s body, as in this case, responds by displaying symptoms such as muscle soreness, fatigue, fever, chest pain, and cough. The common medications used are antibiotics. However, this patient has a history of chronic kidney disease; therefore, the medication should be carefully chosen.
Therefore, the medications to be used include amoxicillin/clavulanate and doxycycline (Maves & Kalil, 2023). There are also non-pharmacological approaches that can be used. One of them is having enough rest and taking enough fluids, which helps the body fight and boost the immune system (Cook & Wulf, 2020). Respiration therapy can also be used to help improve the patient’s lung function.
