Advances in technology have made it possible to incorporate systems within the functions of health care to improve efficiency across an organization. Integration of functions can be incorporated in the way inventory is kept, supplies are ordered, how patients are billed, and in many other areas. Innovation is key because it drives productivity, reduces errors, and increases profitability.

Identify an area within your current organization or one in which you have worked where there is a need for systems integration that will improve quality care and outcomes in the organization.

Create a wire diagram of the area needing systems integration. Illustrate and label how the processes and functions within the chosen area are connected and how they can be integrated. You may choose the software program you use to create the diagram.

Utilize your research from the Systems Research activity and consider the below components as you develop the wire diagram:

  • How the system can be used to improve the organization\’s processes and quality
  • Stakeholders that will be affected by the new integration
  • How and when integration will be communicated
  • Empowerment strategies to influence change
  • Leader versus manager roles during the process

Healthcare systems continue to benefit from the technological advancements given the approach involved in the system integration. An integrated system is critical in effective management processes. In most cases, integrating the work processes within the healthcare organization makes the management of patients and general care easier. The method of integrating the medical system may also reduce clinical errors that often lead to further complications and increased utilization of financial resources by the insurance company. The integration of functions can be incorporated the same way inventories are kept, how patients are billed, how supplies are ordered and in many other different areas.

Innovation is essential as it drives productivity, increases profitability, and reduce consistent errors in the treatment processes. In healthcare settings, system integration facilitates work processes and quality healthcare delivery (Suter et al., 2019). With the properly integrated system, it is easier to manage patients and address their needs within the stipulated time. Also, with the system, it is easier to conduct follow-up treatments given the healthcare professional’s willingness to work in support with other stakeholders.

There are key principles for successful health system integration. One of the principles is that the system should be able to provide comprehensive services across the care continuum. The integrated system should be able to enhance the corporation between health and social care organizations. It should also be able to facilitate access to care continuum with multiple points of access. An integrated system is usually patient focus; it should concentrate on the needs of the patients and support their engagement and participation. Also, it should be based on the population needs, i.e. it should be able to focus on the defined population (Wang et al., 2018).

An integrated system should be based on standardized care delivery through the interprofessional teams. Finally, system integration should encourage physical integration. In most cases, physicians are the gateway to an integrated healthcare delivery system. They are pivotal when it comes to the development and maintenance of the single-point-of-entry or even the electronic patient records. While developing the system, there is always the engagement of physicians in leading roles as well as their participation on board.

The area that Needs System Integration

In my organization of work, system integration is required to link laboratory operations, radiology room, pharmacy, patients and healthcare decision support. The need arises as a result of more time that is always taken by the patients to move from one treatment area to the other. Also, the integration is critical due to the increasing number of patients that are always accessing these areas in the healthcare settings.

Linking these areas of operation through the system integration will most likely reduce the medication errors, reduce inconveniences caused by delays in the treatment processes. The need system integration wire diagram will most likely improve the treatment processes, a scenario that will eventually lead to the delivery of quality care to the patients. With the incorporation and all the factors required in the establishment of an effective treatment process, the model is likely to enhance nurse’s as well as physician’s activities when it comes to the delivery of quality healthcare.

From the system integration wire diagram above, the laboratory operations, pharmaceutical department, radiology as well as other healthcare information are interlinked through the health mediator mobile agent. The systems are further interlinked with the doctor agent, patient management system agent, and the healthcare decision support system. Therefore, anyone operating in the pharmaceutical department can easily obtain information from the radiology and laboratory departments in the process of treatments. Further, the pharmaceutical, radiology, laboratory, and other healthcare information system managements requires agents who may perform different activities. The system gives a direct link to the doctor agent who can be consulted or those who can be directed to perform the activities in these departments.

In most cases, there are always cases of miscommunication from one treatment area or department to the other. The variation in the communication process can always lead to poor diagnosis and wrong prescriptions of medication. The above system, therefore, provides a solution to the problems that may arise, it provides clear communication between the pharmaceutical and other departments such as the radiology and the department of a patient management system. From the diagram, health mediator mobile agent act as the server where all information is withdrawn.

From the server, there is the transmission of information from one department to the other; it also records all the activities taking place within the healthcare systems.
The system is also connected to the database where the patient information can be withdrawn. Usually, when the patient is admitted to the hospital, their personal information, including medical history, is recorded. All the above activities take place in the database. In other words, when the order entry is made, the information is passed through the server (Health mediator mobile agent) into the patient management system, patient agent (Yuehong et al., 2016). The information entered can further be shared with other departments such as laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy. Further, the information can be shared with the doctor agent, HER, and CBR.

How the System Can Be Used To Improve Organization’s Processes and Quality

The system provides an elaborate mechanism for communication, and therefore, it can be used to the elimination of practices that may lead to further complications. Specifically, through the integration of other healthcare processes with the pharmaceutical department, the system can enhance processes geared towards eliminating medication errors. As a result, it leads to improvement in the delivery of quality healthcare. With the integration of different processes, the system can also enhance the operation of nurses, physicians and all the stakeholders involved in an attempt to enhance quality operation. Some of the quality stakeholders that will be affected include nurses, physicians, doctors, and management.

The integrated will be communicated as soon as the process of implementation is ready. Some of the empowerment strategies that will influence change include planning for the implementation processes, workshops and training programs to enhance skills towards the application of the system, and involvement of experts in the operational processes. Given the fact that current employees are not well equipped with the knowledge and technical abilities to handle the system, training is one of the strategies that will ensure the full implementation of the system within the healthcare system. The empowerment strategies are critical when it comes to the successful operation of the system within the healthcare systems.

During the process of implementation of the system, leaders and managers will play critical roles. Nurses leaders would ensure that nurses and other healthcare professionals are given the right skills to initiate the required changes. They will be provided with the right training so to develop relevant skills when it comes to the use of the system. The management should ensure the development of the right policies that may be important when it comes to the successful implementation of the system.
