INTRODUCTION

The health care industry is always striving to improve patient outcomes and attain organizational goals. Nurses can play a critical role in achieving these goals; one way to encourage nurse participation in larger organizational efforts is to create a shared vision and team goals (Mulvale et al., 2016). Participation in interdisciplinary teams can also offer nurses opportunities to share their expertise and leadership skills, fostering a sense of ownership and collegiality.

You are encouraged to complete the Budgeting for Nurses activity before you develop the plan proposal. The activity consists of seven questions that will allow you the opportunity to check your knowledge of budgeting basics and as well as the value of financial resource management. The information gained from completing this formative will promote success with the Interdisciplinary Plan Proposal. Completing this activity also demonstrates your engagement in the course, requires just a few minutes of your time, and is not graded.

PROFESSIONAL CONTEXT

This assessment will allow you to describe a plan proposal that includes an analysis of best practices of interprofessional collaboration, change theory, leadership strategies, and organizational resources with a financial budget that can be used to solve the problem identified through the interview you conducted in the prior assessment.

INSTRUCTION

For this assessment, use the context of the organization where you conducted your interview to develop a viable plan for an interdisciplinary team to address the issue you identified. Define a specific patient or organizational outcome or objective based on the information gathered in your interview.

The goal of this assessment is to clearly lay out the improvement objective for your planned interdisciplinary intervention of the issue you identified. Additionally, be sure to further build on the leadership, change, and collaboration research you completed in the previous assessment. Look for specific, real-world ways in which those strategies and best practices could be applied to encourage buy-in for the plan or facilitate the implementation of the plan for the best possible outcome.

Medical errors among new graduate nurses are a significant care quality issue since they hamper patient safety and job satisfaction among nursing staff. This plan proposes an interdisciplinary approach to address the problem through a comprehensive training program on appropriate medication administration procedures. The targeted outcome is to improve new graduate nurses’ medication administration skills to reduce medication errors and improve patient safety in the organization.

To train new graduate nurses on proper medication administration procedures using current technologies with the goal of preventing medical errors. 1. Is a training program the most effective intervention to prevent medical errors among new graduate nurses?

  • It is appropriate since it helps to reduce the skills gap and creates a more proficient workforce. For better outcomes, the training should focus on incapacity areas hampering nurses’ ability to administer medications appropriately.

2. How much time is needed for the training program to be designed, implemented, and evaluated?

  • One month would be adequate for the design and implementation. The evaluation should be conducted after three months.

3. Is there any significant barrier that could hamper the training?

  • Resource problems could be a major setback, but fortunately, the training program relies primarily on internal facilitation.

Change Theories and Leadership Strategies

Kurt Lewin’s change theory would be effective in developing an interdisciplinary solution for medical errors among new graduate nurses. According to Burnes (2020), Lewin’s change theory has three phases unfreezing, changing, and refreezing. Unfreezing involves the discernment that change is vital, followed by movement to the desired direction (changing), while refreezing involves adopting measures to solidify new behaviors. Guided by this theory, the interdisciplinary team would first acknowledge the problem requiring teamwork to solve.

Next, the team would implement the training program together by sharing diverse skills and values to enable nurses to enable new graduate nurses to administer medications properly (changing). Behavior solidification can be achieved through mandatory yearly training for nurses on medication procedures and workplace cultures. New nurses should also undergo mandatory orientation training to ensure they are conversant with procedures and workplace culture.

Leadership strategies affect how a team works and overall output. The transformational leadership approach would help the team to develop an interdisciplinary solution to medical errors. Its foundation principle is a shared vision, which the team requires for inspiration to achieve a common goal (Asif et al., 2019).

Team leaders should also foster respectful interactions among team members. Mutual respect enhances interdisciplinary cooperation since team members feel appreciated and valued, which encourages them to express themselves confidently (Noyes, 2022). This cohesion is vital for a team comprising diverse members from different disciplines.

Team Collaboration Strategy

  • The organization’s manager will facilitate the material and financial resources needed for the training program.
  • Nurse leaders will organize new graduate nurses and prepare them for the training.
  • Internal and external trainers will show new graduate nurses how to verify medications before administration using barcode scanning and similar technologies.
  • Program analysts will guide trainers and nurse leaders on implementation and evaluation essentials.
  • Departmental leaders will organize regular group meetings for the interdisciplinary team to review progress, challenges, and crucial improvement areas.

Clear roles and responsibilities promote collaboration by reducing the possibility of conflicts. Besides, delegating roles is crucial for interdependence and requires team members to interact regularly and update each other on the progress (Lisak et al., 2022). Regular team meetings organized by departmental leaders and other opportunities for progress reviews can make an interdisciplinary team more cohesive. Team meetings allow members to share professional goals, concerns, and aspirations.

Required Organizational Resources

The success of the training depends on the availability of various human, financial, and material resources. Internal staff includes the managers, departmental leaders, program analysts, and nurse leaders. An external trainer can also be integrated into the team, particularly for training the nurses on the ethical and safe use of technologies. Some nurses can also volunteer to distribute materials and other simple tasks. A computer, training halls, projector, handouts, brochures, and writing materials are vital for an effective presentation/training.

Since most materials are available in the facility, the projected cost is $650 for the materials. Trainers’ remuneration will be approximately $400 for four sessions. Therefore, the overall training will cost about $1,050. It is hoped that the training will be successful since the persistence of medication errors implies a loss of the resources used to conduct the training. Furthermore, medication costs have huge cost implications since they increase patient injuries, health complications, and hospitalizations. A successful program would save the organization all these costs.

Conclusion

New nurses join the practice looking forward to providing high-quality care. However, new graduate nurses may lack an appropriate transition from education into practice. Medical errors are a common problem experienced by new graduate nurses. An interdisciplinary team approach can help to solve the problem by bringing team members with diverse skills, values, and perspectives to design, implement, and evaluate a training program on proper medication administration for new graduate nurses.
