Quantitative Annotated Bibliography

In this week’s discussion question you were asked to consider a potential problem (appropriate to your role option) that you would like to investigate through nursing research. For this assignment you will review current research from South’s Online Library and provide a critical evaluation on that research through an annotated bibliography.

An annotated bibliography is a brief summary and analysis of the journal article reviewed. For more information on annotated bibliographies please visit Purdue’s OWL Purdue Online Writing Lab

A total of two annotated bibliographies are to be submitted (not to exceed one page each). The articles must come from nursing scholarly literature and may not be older than 5 years since publication. Please note that the articles must be research based and reflect a quantitative methodology (review our reading assignments). Web pages, magazines, textbooks, and other books are not acceptable.

Each annotation must address the following critical elements

  • Explanation of the main purpose and scope of the cited work
  • Brief description of the research conducted
  • Value and significance of the work (e.g., study’s findings, scope of the research project) as a contribution to the subject under consideration

Possible shortcomings or bias in the work

  • Conclusions or observations reached by the author
  • Summary as to why this research lends evidence to support the potential problem identified specific to your role option.

Covid19 pandemic increased the rate of opioid abuse and its associated complications among drug and substance abusers. The opioid abuse crisis placed immense pressure on the already overburdened healthcare system by covid19. Effective interventions were essential to optimize health outcomes of the affected populations. Therefore, this paper is an annotated bibliography of opioid overdose during covid19 period in America.

Annotated Bibliography

  • Friedman, J. R., & Hansen, H. (2022). Evaluation of Increases in Drug Overdose Mortality Rates in the US by Race and Ethnicity Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic. JAMA Psychiatry, 79(4), 379–381. https //doi.org/10.1001/jamapsychiatry.2022.0004

The above study evaluated the increase in drug overdose mortality rates by ethnicity and race before and after covid19 pandemic in the USA. The study was a cross-sectional study that adopted randomized publicly available data, which did not demand the study approval by an institutional review board. The data utilized in the research was obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention WONDER and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).

The data was used to calculate the drug overdose rate by 100000 population by race and ethnicity for 1999 to 2020. The results of this study showed that the overdose death rate in Black individuals rose from 24.7 in 2019 to 36.8 in 2020, a rate higher by 16.3% for White individuals. The rates among Latino or Hispanic individuals were among the lowest.

This study is important for the topic since it demonstrates the effect of vocid19 on drug overdose. It also shows that the mortality rate due to drug overdose affected Blacks than any other ethnicity in the USA. The study is associated with some limitations. First, it used secondary data, which may not provide insights into causation. Secondly, the data used was of 2020, which may not provide a true estimate of final mortality due to drug overdose.

The researchers concluded that covid19 pandemic increased drug overdose and mortality as compared to pre-covid-19 periods. This study shows the existence of drugs such as opioid abuse during covid19. It also shows the shows public health impacts of the problem, hence, its significance to the topic of focus in the project.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Drug Use Behaviors, Fentanyl Exposure, and Harm Reduction Service Support among People Who Use Drugs in Rural Settings. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 19(4), Article 4. https //doi.org/10.3390/ijerph19042230

The above study assessed the impact of covid19 pandemic on drug use behaviors, fentanyl exposure, and harm reduction service support among people who use drugs in rural settings in America. The researchers adopted a mixed-method approach and convenience sampling to obtain the study subjects. The researchers conducted 50 surveys and 19 qualitative interviews to obtain data for this study.

The results showed that drug use increased during the pandemic, including opioids and fentanyl. The pandemic disrupted the supply chain, leading to decreased drug availability. The consequences of these changes included drug overdose, feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Harm reduction strategies that were utilized included naloxone and fentanyl test strips.

This study is significant for the project since it shows the increased drug overdose during the pandemic, effects, and harm reduction strategies that were adopted. It informs evidence-based strategies for preventing opioid overdose in communities and in times of calamities such as covid19 pandemic. One of the weaknesses of the study is its small sample size that affects generalization of the findings.

The authors concluded that access to harm reduction services is crucial to address the problem of drug overdose during pandemics. This study is important in lending evidence to the issue of opioid abuse. It shows that drug abuse increased during the pandemic. It also identifies harm reduction strategies that should be adopted in practice.

Conclusion

In conclusion, opioid and other drugs overdose increased during covid19 pandemic. Opioid overdose adversely affects the health of the abusers. Therefore, the reviewed studies illustrate the severity of the problem and interventions to address it.
