Sample Answer
- Describe two preventative care screenings recommended for the identified population.
Practicing in primary care during my practicum experience we see all ages from birth to elderly population. Two preventive care screenings that are recommended for that broad population are cholesterol screening and well visits are recommended. Cholesterol screenings begins around age 10 and should be repeated every 5 years throughout life. Especially for those who have a family history of stroke and or heart disease. Well visits are another recommended prevented screening for this population. Well child visits start at age 3 and continue until age 21, and then annually for adults. (Pahigiannis.2019)
Discuss the preventative care provided at your clinical practicum site by addressing the following;
- What guidelines do providers use to determine which screenings to offer?
Guidelines that are used to determine what screening to offer are, the importance of the screening to the patient and patient’s health, the patients’ health history, the cost, the accuracy of the screening are all guideline use when providing screenings. Being that my practicum site sees both pediatric patient and adults the screening would range starting with well child visits.
- How would you describe the quality of the preventative care you have observed? Have you observed disparities or bias in the care provided to different members of the population?
The preventive care I have observed has been pertinent for the patient population that we see. The office is in a rural area, the cholesterol screening I have found to be the go to for this population of people. Disability, education and income are a disparity that I have witness within this population. (Healthy people 2030) states that People with higher levels of education are more likely to be healthier and live longer than those with little or no education.
- How are screening recommendations presented to patients? How do providers address health literacy and the National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) in Health and Health Care Links to an external site? When providing patient education about screenings?
Depending on the patients’ health, age and condition is how the recommendations are presented to the patient at the time of their visit. Health literacy is addressed through translation and Interpretation line for non-English speaking patients, Layout and imagery, use basic language are all to help provide efficient care to patients.
- Screening opportunities are often missed in vulnerable populations and those with limited access to care. Describe changes you recommend in your practice setting and community to increase the frequency of preventative screenings within vulnerable populations.
As I expressed above that rural areas have disparities such as income, education and disability. This is something we can’t change, but can provide them with the care that they need through the many programs that my assist them with cost. We can educate patients using simple, plain language and terms that they can understand encouraging preventive screenings by expressing the importance.
