Discussion Question

Formulating the Research Question, Problem Statement, Research Purpose
In the Week 1 discussion forum you had an opportunity to present a potential problem and an innovative solution specific to your role specialization.

In addition, you have reviewed the literature to identify qualitative and quantitative research articles and submitted annotated bibliographies to provide evidence supporting the problem. Considering the feedback provided to you by the faculty member it is now time to prepare your problem statement, research purpose, and research question.

First share your refined problem and proposed solution (given your review of literature this may have changed depending on the evidence you were able to provide). Next, follow the steps to help define your research question.

  • Craft the problem statement and research purpose.
  • Design your research question aimed at solving (a part of) the problem and include the following components which will focus the literature review.

PICOT Question

Patient, Population or Problem

  • What are the characteristics of the patient or population?
  • What is the condition or disease you are interested in?

Intervention or exposure

  • What do you want to do with this patient (e.g. treat, diagnose, observe)?

Comparison

  • . What is the alternative to the intervention (e.g. placebo, different drug, surgery)?

Outcome

  • What are the relevant outcomes (e.g. morbidity, death, complications)?
  • Ensure that the research question is answerable, feasible and clinically relevant

The next step in Submissions Area will be to develop a research hypothesis from the research question.
Provide constructive feedback to your classmate’s responses.

Rubric

  • Discuss your library search strategies and briefly summarize the literature you reviewed. Focus your discussion on the problem and how the literature you identified provides evidence of the existence of the problem.
  •  Include in your discussion a potential innovation that you might consider as a solution to the problem identified.
  •  Include citations/references in APA style format, using citations where appropriate.

I have included the previous assignments for your review.

Problem and Proposed Solution

From week 1 the problem under investigation was obesity. Obesity is a serious healthcare problem that is associated with reduced quality of life and poorer mental health conditions. Obesity is also associated with an increase in the number of complications such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, stroke and other types of cancers (Cipriani et al., 2016).

There are different risk factors of obesity including overeating, overconsumption of junk foods, reduced physical activities, as well as genetic inheritance (Werneck et al., 2018). The main problem is the increasing cases of obesity among the population. The proposed solution to the health problem include educational programs and behavioral change among the population. Educational and behavioral change interventions are essential in the management of obesity.

Problem Statement and Research Purpose

Obesity has both mental and physical health complications for people of all ages. The complications associated with obesity range from medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, as well as pulmonary problems. Also, obesity is associated with the reduced self-esteem, social isolation, as well as depression. Providing solution to the increasing cases of obesity is therefore essential in ensuring a healthy population.

Research Purpose

The purpose of the research is to analyze the best interventions that are essential in the management of obesity. Some of the best interventions that the research is based on include educational approaches and behavioral change.

Research Questions

  • . What are some of the diseases and complications associated with obesity
  • What are some of the risk factors to obesity?
  • What are some of the mental and physical issues associated with obesity?
  • What are some of the best interventions that can be applied to reduce the cases of obesity?

PICOT Question

For individuals suffering from obesity (P), can lifestyle changes (I) compared to medical interventions (C) help to reduce the complications associated with obesity (O) in six months (T)?

Patient, Population or Problem

The patient population under consideration involves individuals between the age of 18 and 70 years. The population will involve people who are either overweight or obese. Also, the population will involve individuals who are at risk of obesity. The condition or disease under consideration is obesity.

The disease often lead to deterioration in mental health, it also lead to the growth of different health complications such as high blood pressure, hypertension, diabetes and the related conditions. With the increase in the unhealthy living behaviors, more people are exposed to obesity.

Patients involved in the research process will be observed to examine whether the interventions applied can reduce the conditions associated with obesity. The alternative to the interventions (educational and behavioral change) is the treatment process using the drug, phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia).

The relevant outcome associated with the interventions and medications above include reduction in the body weight which will in turn reduce the occurrences of the complexities associated with the obesity.
