Strengths and Challenges Affecting Haiti
Strengths Haiti has a lower number of daily deaths at 252 compared to Venezuela at 592. Despite the shortage in the number of healthcare providers, the population is seeking complementary medicine as an alternative to medical help.
Challenges The country is facing an increase in gang violence resulting in increased insecurity. In addition, the medical facilities are poorly staffed and equipped limiting access to medical services (UN, 2024). The country is also facing a rise in food insecurity and deaths due to non-communicable diseases such as ischemic heart disease.
Strengths and Challenges Affecting Venezuela
Strengths The country has a lower under-five infant mortality rate of 29 deaths per 1000 infants compared to Haiti at 56.5 deaths per 1000. Women are actively seeking birth control and contraceptive services despite their shortage (DOS, n.d).
Challenges Venezuela has a higher number of deaths per day at 592 compared to Haiti at 252. Food and supply shortages, unavailability of vaccines, and non-communicable diseases have contributed to an increase in mortality deaths.
There has been an increase in levels of crime and interpersonal violence which has contributed to a health crisis due to healthcare provider shortage.
Disasters that Impact Haiti
Haiti is at risk of developing natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and tropical storms. Additionally, the country is facing instability resulting from gang violence resulting in food insecurity.
Disasters that Impact Venezuela
The country is currently facing a food shortage and outbreaks of communicable diseases such as measles, tuberculosis, and measles. Crime and interpersonal violence has also been on the rise. Lastly, there is a shortage of medical supplies.
Organizations That Have Responded
International aid through organizations such as the World Food Program (WFP) has been crucial in providing food in times of emergencies especially in schools and through food vouchers. United Nations Agency of International Development (USAID) has also promoted economic growth, job creation, education, and agricultural development.
