Musically, Hamilton demonstrates a way of employing several musical scores which could alter history as per the assignment’s option 2. This transdisciplinary perspective is necessary for making historical stories relevant to the current audiences (Schoch, 2023). With elements of hip hop, RnB, jazz and ‘traditional’ Broadway musical theatre, Hamilton, created by Lin-Manuel Miranda is an excellent example of an interdisciplinary musical.
Hip-hop relates well to Hamilton as a musical since some songs are fast in flowing lyrics, perfect for portraying his ambition with rapid popularity (Pizzato, 2019). Miranda referred to Hip-hop as the “language of revolution’ adding to the story’s political themes (Harrison, 2018). Such combination of musical genres allows presenting history in a more engaging manner and let the historical material be interesting for contemporaneity.
In addition, given present socio-political relevance, Miranda’s intention to cast people of color as America’s Founding Fathers recasts the tale of the American Revolution to suit the current, diverse face of America (Lodge & Laird, 2021). For this combination of genres, scholars have praised for the expansion of the musical territory and for explaining how historical narratives can be made more diverse and representative (Hill, 2018). This piece of music and the mixed casting helps to break boundaries of pessimistic conventionalism and allows the large audience to find such story engaging.
As a new perspective on the history of America, Hamilton adapts some of the most successful sorts of the contemporary musical theater and modern popular music types, including hip-hop, jazz, and the most classical feeling of the musical theater. In the case of Miranda, one can accent that the author frees herself from traditional approaches to both narrative and historical genres while reestablishing how histories could be narrated at all. Hamilton is culturally significant and groundbreaking art because this approach revives history and engages with timely race constants as well as cultural representation.
