Nurses use research to answer clinical questions and improve patient care. The design of nursing research can be tailored to provide supportive evidence for practice. Quantitative and qualitative designs can be used to generate descriptive or explanatory data, respectively. A quantitative study may be used to determine the prevalence of a phenomenon, while a qualitative study may be used to explore patients’ experiences with a particular intervention. When designing nursing research, it is important to consider the methodological rigor of the study. The level of evidence generated by a study can vary depending on the methodological quality of the investigation.
Nursing research may be modified to produce data that supports clinical practice. In order to do this, the researcher must first identify the question that they are seeking to answer. From there, they can select an appropriate study design and data collection methods that will best answer the question (Pollock et al., 2020). It is important for researchers to use a systematic approach when designing their studies in order to ensure that all aspects of the study are considered.
