The introduction comprises five key elements presenting the topic, providing background information, identifying the research problem, stating the objectives, and outlining the structure of the paper (Barroga & Matanguihan, 2022).

The introduction should begin with a compelling statement highlighting the subject matter’s significance. The background section of a paper can vary depending on its approach. Argumentative papers typically explore general background information, while empirical papers tend to review previous research. The section on the research problem clearly explains how the research aligns with the overall objective and tackles the identified issue (Barroga & Matanguihan, 2022). The objectives section can vary depending on the type of paper.

The concluding section of the introduction typically provides a succinct summary of the remaining content of the paper. It should be presented straightforwardly, using the present tense. This aids the reader in comprehending the organization of the paper and its intended objective.

How does PICOT help form a clinical question?

The PICOT process is a methodical approach to research that entails formulating a clinical question and creating a well-organized query. A PICOT question comprises the following components population (Patient, population, or problem), intervention (treatment), comparison (Comparison or control), outcome (measurement tool or objective), and time (data collection duration) (Barroga & Matanguihan, 2022). The population represents the group of subjects that will be recruited, while the intervention refers to the treatment being administered.

The comparison group serves as the reference group, and the outcome is the specific result that will be measured. Lastly, the time refers to the duration during which data will be collected. The PICOT process streamlines the search for evidence by gathering and integrating the relevant terms to express the information needs in the query language of the search service. After formulating the question using the PICO structure, researchers can identify the most suitable research approach to obtain a comprehensive answer.
