Health Promotion

  • Health promotion is the act of enhancing health outcomes.
  • Crucial for reducing the risks associated with chronic illnesses and morbidity.
  • Focuses on the social determinants of health, including social, economic, political, and cultural factors
  • Supports the creation of preventive measures that reduce healthcare expenses.

Cut-Annoyed-Guilty-Eye (CAGE)

The CAGE questionnaire is a user-friendly and efficient tool for identifying patients who experience challenges related to alcohol abuse and dependence.

The CAGE questionnaire falls under the category of rapid screening. It includes four questions a nurse practitioner can ask:

  1. Have you ever considered limiting your alcohol intake?
  2. Have people’s criticisms of your drinking offended you?
  3. Have you ever felt terrible or regretful about drinking?
  4. Have you consumed alcohol early in the morning to cure a hangover?

The more significant number of affirmative responses indicates alcohol dependence (Elliott, 2019).

The CAGE screening tool offers the advantage of being less intrusive for individuals facing alcohol abuse (Guertler et al., 2019). The questions are phrased in response to the existing stigma surrounding alcohol dependence. Additionally, research suggests that the CAGE questionnaire is a reliable screening tool, with a 93% accuracy rate in identifying individuals with alcohol dependence (Elliott, 2019). Despite the high effectiveness of the CAGE screening tool, it has several drawbacks. One drawback of the CAGE questionnaire is its inability to differentiate between current and past drinking issues, particularly when there is no introductory question.

The significance of screening tools in health promotion

One advantage of screening methods in health promotion is that diseases may be detected early. Some screening technologies may benefit health by detecting risk factors for specific illnesses. Screening technologies improve health promotion by promoting healthy lifestyle choices (Labe, 2020). Furthermore, screening methods boost health by lowering the expenditures associated with late-stage treatment.

The ethical issues linked to health promotion practice

Strategies used to affect individual health habits in health promotion have ethical concerns. The concerns are divided into two categories efficacy-based considerations and autonomy-based considerations (Varkey, 2021). The ethical purpose of health promotion is not to modify behavior but to enable people to live healthier lives. Empowerment has a more significant effect since it increases an individual’s or group’s autonomy in participating in healthy behavior.

The Economic Issues Relative to Health Promotion Practice

Nurses must have access to crucial economic resources to increase their performance in health promotion initiatives (Varkey, 2021). Nurses need appropriate resources to prevent illnesses and reach a larger population. Alcohol addiction treatment and therapy need substantial financial investment. Because the number of alcoholics is considerable, nurses must have enough financial assistance.

Legal issues

A legal concern in health promotion practice involves the licensing and safety of tests. Nurse practitioners are responsible for safeguarding confidentiality to prevent any misuse that may compromise the health of individuals or groups. Furthermore, individuals should have the right to refuse screening (Varkey, 2021). Written consent should be obtained to ensure the legal validity of the screening consent. Additional legal concerns regarding health promotion practices include accreditation and qualification.

Laws support and strengthen the endeavors of nurses in health promotion. Legislative measures, including taxation, can be implemented to address products that negatively impact the health of individuals and communities. The primary objective of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is to prevent the unauthorized disclosure of patient information (Varkey, 2021).

Laws and regulations enable patients to access essential information for making informed decisions about their health.

Recommendations

Providing people and communities who have undergone screening with counseling services is essential (Labe, 2020). The screening technique must comply with all relevant legal, ethical, and economic issues. During attempts to promote health, nurses should not center their attention on altering the behavior of an individual or group of people. It is very suggested that nurse practitioners take part in establishing plans for health promotion.
