Therapeutic Relationship Case 2
Apart from catering for physical and emotional needs of patients, nurses are trained to advocate not only for other healthcare workers but also for their patients. For T.D (in Case 2) to exercise advocacy in care provision she might consider several approaches that could potentially promote the student’s welfare. In the case where she discovers that several third graders lack breakfast at home, she might collaborate with social workers who will help her to understand the financial constrains the families of these children are facing and look for funds either from the institution or from donors to help out.
She can also implement nutrition support programs for the students who do not get breakfast at home and notify childcare assistance programs(Williams et al., 2018).She can also promote policies and part of the teams making policies that strive to eliminate poverty and hunger in her region. These will improve the lives of these children who are evidently not only socially but economically disadvantaged.
Moral distress occurs in situations where healthcare providers are faced with situations where their ethical values interfere with care provision (Showalter et al., 2022). This is a common and big problem that a large percentage of practicing nurses have encountered as moral practice is an important part in nursing care. As a healthcare provider, I experienced moral distress some years back while nursing Covid- 19 patients.
Just like the whole population was scared of the new virus, I was scared of contacting the virus while taking care of critically ill patients and even worse transferring the virus to my family members. Despite all these, I was able to take care of patients without adequate and proper protective gears. I was also overwhelmed by the large number of critical patients thus tough decisions had to be made on whether or not to continue life support and other treatment modalities even though it was not in the best interest of the patient.
Health promotion and morality are closely linked in healthcare provision with health promotion seeking to promote well-being, in line with moral principles aimed at preventing harm and promoting health. This includes empowering the individual patient to make an informed decision based on their condition and reflecting on the ethical duty to improve autonomy in an attempt to improve their overall health.
Proper communication is the foundation of patient- nurse relationship and it has been linked to building trust and comfort in nursing care (Afriyie, 2020).My communication strengths include active listening and empathy, enabling me to connect with patients and create a rapport with them. However, I have noted occasional challenges in discussing end-of-life decisions due to the emotional intensity involved. Establishing trust might be difficult in situations where patients have experienced past medical trauma while terminating relationships might be challenging when patients feel dependent on ongoing support.
