Introduction
There are many various forms of nursing, in addition to the many nursing theories and evidence-based approaches. Nurses may employ evidence-based nursing to give high-quality care to their patients. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a more thorough explanation of how The Self-CareDeficit Theory may be used to back up evidence-based practice in the realm of family nursing.
The Self-Care Deficit Theory
Dorothea E. Orem, came up with the Self-Care Deficit Theory. The model establishes new connections between ideas, leading to a novel interpretation of the topic under study. If it is compatible with other established ideas, laws, and principles, nurses may utilize it to guide and enhance their practice.
The Major Assumptions Of Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory
- People need to learn to take care of themselves
- Human beings are unique.
- Caregiving is an active profession.
- An important part of primary care prevention and illness is ensuring that people have the resources they need to successfully satisfy universal and development self-care requirements.
- Self-care requires health awareness.
- Independent and dependent caring are taught across time and location
Orem’s Theory
Orem’s Theory is comprised of three related parts:
- The theory of self-care
- The theory of self-care deficit
- The theory of the nursing system.
The Theory of Self-Care
The concept of self-care encompasses a range of practices that individuals undertake to maintain their own health, well-being, and overall quality of life.
Self-Care Deficits
Self-care deficits encompass challenges in performing activities of daily living such as dressing and bathing. Self-care deficiencies may arise due to factors such as:
- Surgery recovery
- Melancholy
- Age-related mobility challenges.
According to Orem’s self-care deficiency hypothesis, self-care autonomy facilitates patients’ recuperation. Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) programs instruct students on this particular nursing theory.
Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory
- Self-care—showering, eating, moving, etc.
- Self-care agencies, which may be influenced by health and the environment,
- Self-care demand—the patient’s measures to address their shortcomings
Orem’s self-care deficit hypothesis specifies five ways nurses may aid in various situations:
- Serving others
- Leading
- Aiding
- Fostering personal growth for future needs
- Teaching
FNP Interventions
- Hygiene – Regular reminders to bathe and wash (Taylor, 2021).
- Dressing/grooming — Suggesting easy-to-put-on and take-off clothes, offering them privacy, and motivating them often.
- Feeding— Use feeding schedule
- Toileting—Use bedpans, suppositories, stool softeners, or commodes.
- Speech deficiency— Collaborate with speech pathologists.
