The quest for improved patient care outcomes has led to various efforts and initiatives to achieve the goal. Advanced Practice Nurses are expected to embrace independence and be innovative to help build a healthcare system that achieves the requirements of patient-centered care, quality, accessibility, affordability, and safety.

One aspect which can be central to achieving these goals is the appropriate business planning from a system approach, which ensures that relevant cost implications are brought into view (Hamric et al.,2013). Therefore, the purpose of this discussion is to explore the process of advanced practice nurse business planning from a system approach.

An advanced nurse practitioner who engages in a business process and a venture needs to follow various strategies. For example, the plan should integrate research while formulating the objectives, developing a business profile, the evaluation plan, the implementation plan, and other aspects such as vision and mission.

While it is important to understand the whole process, the advanced practitioner nurse should also possess an adequate understanding of other aspects, such as financial implications and aspects of the business of interest, the requirements for the business operations, and the regulations which impact the business operations (DeNisco, 2019).

The nursing education obtained can form the basis for formulating an appropriate business plan and ensuring that the suggested initiative is viable to improve the chances of successful implementation. The initial phase of business planning from the system approach involves research and the formulation of objectives and a business plan.

Various factors influence the process of formulating a business plan, including the gap identified in the market, the practice operational hours, the practice location, the type of services to be offered, the targeted group, and the business purpose. The next step which an APN should consider is formulating a business profile. In the creation of a profile, various aspects should be considered, such as the mission and vision statements, writing down the services to be offered, and identifying the details needed for registering the business (Hamric et al.,2013).

The next step after the business profile is proposing how the services will be delivered. The aspects to be considered in this phase include the facility, equipment, and the number of staff or teams needed. The APN should also look at the management plan and the marketing plan, both of which are vital if the project or the business has to succeed.

It is important that the APN puts all the steps together in business planning to enhance the chances of successful implementation of the proposed business and the evaluation process, which mainly entails an exploration into how best the program has succeeded. In addition, engaging in a business plan such as a private venture allows the APN to practice to the full extent and potential of the license and skills.

Depending on where the APN resides, they can either practice with full authority or restricted authority (Hamric et al.,2013). The implication is that a nurse who aspires to undertake business planning and explore aspects such as private venture has to consider the state laws and regulations; whether the laws and regulations allow the full practice, and expects the APN to take full responsibility and liability in their dealings or not

Conclusion

Business development and business concepts are rarely part of nursing education. However, they need to be part and parcel of both the undergraduate and postgraduate programs to help equip them with business planning skills. Therefore, this discussion has explored business planning. The stages involved in planning from the systems approach have all been explored.
