NRS 410 CLC Evidence-Based Practice Project Intervention Presentation on Diabetes Part 2

Paper Instructions

Assessment Description

This is a Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) assignment.

As a group, identify a research or evidence-based article published within the last 5 years that focuses comprehensively on a specific intervention or new treatment tool for the management of diabetes in adults or children. The article must be relevant to nursing practice.

Create a 12-15 slide PowerPoint presentation (not including the title page and references) on the study’s findings and how they can be used by nurses as an intervention. Include speaker notes for each slide and additional slides for the title page and references.

Include the following;

  • Describe the intervention or treatment tool and the specific patient population used in the article.
  • Summarize the main idea of the research findings for the specific patient population. The research presented must include clinical findings that are current, thorough, and relevant to diabetes and nursing practice.
  • Provide a description of how the treatment tool or intervention can be integrated into nursing practice. Provide evidence to support your discussion. Reflect how the treatment tool or intervention will affect nursing practice and the disease process.
  • Explain why psychological, cultural, and spiritual aspects are important to consider for a patient who has been diagnosed with diabetes. Describe how support can be offered in these respective areas as part of a plan of care for the patient. Provide examples.

You are required to cite a minimum of three sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and relevant to nursing practice.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Intervention and Treatment Tool

The study focused on the clinical use of the glucose monitoring tools among the adults with type 2 diabetes. Poor management of diabetes results in other life-threatening complications such as renal failure, retinopathy and complications in the nervous system. Therefore, other than the self-monitoring of the blood glucose levels in treating diabetes, other tools such as the continuous glucose monitoring are used and they provide detailed information that tells the level of variability in the blood glucose levels. The monitoring interventions were blindly assigned to the population recruited in the study.

Tool Used

The CGM tool was used in the study to monitor and visualize the significance of regular physical exercise, stress management and the effectiveness of the treatment interventions among the diabetic patients. Other than the monitoring, the tool can also be used to provide relevant education to the population group. Significant studies have focused on the use of CGM in patients with type 2 diabetes and especially those initiated on insulin. The study proposed the CGM tool as effective in assessing glucose variability since it has used before in determining the pharmacological interventions on glucose control and type 2 diabetes variabilities.

Population

The study by Vigersky et al. explored the efficacy and HbA1c reduction based on the use of real-time CGM tool. A total of 100 patients with type diabetes were recruited in the study. The subjects were on therapies including diet monitoring, lifestyle modification and other anti-hypoglycaemia therapies. The patients were randomly assigned to the RT-CGM and this meant an interstitial glucose every 5 minutes cumulating to 288 data points within 24 hours. The intervention was run for 12 weeks intermittently with two weeks of intervention and one week off. The study focused on the adult populations aged 18 years and above and this was applicable to Libre Pro, and Dexcom G4 Platinum. Though, the age limit for the populations used IPro2 CGM tool was 16 years and above.

In another study by Zick et al., a total of 367 patients were recruited. The intervention involved the use of 72 hour CGM on the patients with type 2 diabetes on multiple daily insulin injections. In a similar case, Pazos-Couselo et al (2015) conducted an observational study on 63 patients with type 2 diabetes and on insulin. The patients were on stable regimen and were asked to complete SMBG reading intervention per day for 8 weeks. A comparison analysis was conducted between the SMBG and the CGM to determine the most effective tool for monitoring type 2 diabetic patients.
