Assessment Description

The purpose of this assignment is to examine Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) to determine their application in addressing health equity. Develop a presentation outlining task force goals and relevant information for implementing a CDSS system to improve equity of care and promote health for all patients.

This assignment has indirect care experience requirements. The “Indirect Care Experience Hours” form, found in the Topic 3 Resources, will be used to document the indirect care experience hours completed in Topics 3, 4 and 5. As progress is made on this and subsequent assignments, update this form indicating the date(s) each section is completed.

This form will be submitted in Topic 5. In your role as a nurse informaticist, you have been asked by the Chief Informatics Officer (CIO) to evaluate several clinical decision-making tools to be used by your organization’s stakeholders. The selected Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) will be used to analyze the current state of health equity and information literacy in your organization.

Your first step is to create a task force of stakeholders to participate in the CDSS selection process. Prepare a 10-12 slide PowerPoint presentation for the first task force meeting to include these agenda items

Reason for the Project Explain the organizational need, reason for the project, rationale for implementing a clinical decision-making tool in your organization. Discuss how CDSS can improve health equity and information literacy in your organization.

Task Force Selection Explain why you have been selected to lead this project. In your speaker notes, explain the role of each stakeholder and why they were selected to serve on this task force.

Research Conduct research and identify one popular CDSS system used in the health care industry, include a description of the CDSS system.

Basic Concepts of Systems Review the information and communication technologies (in the electronic health record, mobile health, and telehealth systems). Select one communication technology and discuss how a clinical decision-making tool can be incorporated to improve health equity in patient care.

Crucial Functionality Describe the crucial functions of the selected CDSS. Explain why it is essential to the clinical workflow. Explain the impact of the CDSS on health information exchange, interoperability, and integration of health care.

Task Force Communication Describe how communication technologies support documentation of care and communication among providers and patients at all system levels. Discuss how communication technology will be used to communicate with the task force members during the project.

Yet, implementing and improving these systems continues to be complicated. This presentation will analyze several Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) technologies to assess their use in promoting health equality for all patients in our healthcare organization.

The primary goal of CDSS is to provide prompt information to physicians, patients, and others to guide healthcare choices. CDSS tools consist of order sets tailored for specific ailments or patient types, suggestions, patient-specific information databases, preventative care reminders, and alarms for hazardous circumstances (Hartasanchez et al., 2022).

CDSS can save expenses, enhance productivity, and minimize patient disruption. CDSS may simultaneously handle many areas, such as notifying physicians of potential duplicate tests a patient is scheduled to have (Lyles et al., 2021).

CDSS and Health Equity

CDSS is a system designed to improve health-related decision-making by delivering tailored information to physicians, workers, patients, or others to promote healthcare (Lyles et al., 2021). On the other hand, to provide genuine support for guideline-driven and equity-driven care, the creators of the algorithms and the CDSS systems must work toward eliminating prejudice (Butzner & Cuffee, 2021).

By adopting this method, CDSS may effectively fulfill the commitment to promoting both guideline-based and equity-based care that enhances results and the general health of all individuals.

Task Force Selection

As the nurse informaticist, I am responsible for leading efforts to select appropriate Clinical Decision Support Systems for our organization to advance health equity. A CDSS may enhance health service quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness by using insights from healthcare analytics (Musen et al., 2021).

The American Medical Informatics Association defines informatics as the comprehensive knowledge and advancement of organizing, analyzing, managing, and using the information in healthcare (Rodriguez et al., 2020). Informatics can enhance efficiency in healthcare operations and can improve patient outcomes.

CDSS stakeholders include end-users such as physicians, nurses, laboratory technologists, pharmacists, and patients. Also, sales and marketing teams and CDSS product development and maintenance teams, including system administrators, system developers, system architects, project managers, and system maintenance staff, are involved (Hartasanchez et al., 2022).

The project manager, system designer, and developer collaborate closely as a team under the guidance of the CDSS architect. The project manager monitors the project’s timeline, efficient resource use, and budget. The system analyst/designer collects CDSS requirements and creates a conceptual model of the CDSS.

The developers are accountable for implementing and testing the CDSS. The CDSS is primarily used by physicians, nurses, laboratory technologists, pharmacists, and patients. Each individual has their own set of expectations about CDSS, some of which are fulfilled while others remain unsatisfied.

Research

An instance of a CDSS application is Epic Systems’ tool, which provides evidence-based suggestions and alerts to healthcare organizations throughout patient care. This enhances the precision and swiftness of decision-making, eventually delivering more effective services to patients.

A study by Musen et al. (2021) shown that this software has had a beneficial impact on patient care by enhancing diversity, equality, and inclusion initiatives in healthcare delivery. The software assists healthcare institutions in providing thorough and equitable care by offering tools to identify and address health disparities.

Subica & Brown (2020) state that Epic is globally acknowledged as the most frequently used Electronic Health Record (EHR). Organisations may use the system’s many features, including pooled data, module integration, and the development of decision assistance tools.

Basic Concepts of Systems

The application of information and communication technologies in the healthcare industry is predicated on the creation of digital technologies, databases, and other applications that aim to improve healthcare for individuals and communities, as well as to address the prevention of illness, the treatment of diseases, and the management of chronic illnesses.

Additionally, these technologies aim to provide the capacity for system efficiencies and to prevent medical errors. The development of health information and communication technology has made it possible to access, transmit, process, and store information in more effective and efficient ways.

Web portals, sensors, electronic records, video communication, online games, and mobile applications are all examples of applications or devices that are developed using information and communication technologies that have the potential to bring about positive changes in the healthcare industry (Rodriguez et al., 2020).

Telehealth and CDSS

Telemedicine and CDSSs are prevalent information and communication technologies implemented together to facilitate equitable access to high-Utilizing home healthcare diagnostics platforms and telemedicine has played a pivotal role in expanding access to high-quality healthcare, particularly for underserved and marginalized populations in rural and small-town regions. quality care and simplify patient management.

An instance of a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) application is the tool developed by Epic Systems. It provides evidence-based recommendations and alerts to healthcare organizations directly at the point of treatment. Epic is a digital health records system for hospitals and big medical offices (Subica & Brown, 2020).

The Epic charting system comprises medical templates, patient information, and referrals to enhance healthcare personnel’s ability to offer optimal patient care. The Epic EHR database system includes patient information, reporting, and analytics features.

It is equipped to manage the daily activities of a medical practice, such as maintaining patient medical information. An EMR system contains medical information alone, whereas Epic medal records are accessible inside the Epic EHR system.

Healthcare providers have requested more data openness and interoperability for their electronic health record systems. The Affordable Care Act established new rules for exchanging clinical and administrative data, as outlined by the USCDI.

This new standard requires suppliers to ensure that health applications are more accessible and interoperable and comply with regulations when using APIs. Healthcare organizations rely on EMR/EHR systems to provide structure, order, and compliance, without which they risk becoming disorganized (Lathrop, 2020).

Epic is an electronic health records management tool designed to assist medical professionals, hospitals, and healthcare providers in managing their patient’s medical data by allowing them to add, view, edit, and save information.

This provides organization and coherence for a program with a complex learning process. Patients, physicians, and researchers have improved interoperability within their infrastructure by integrating Epic with existing corporate systems.

Task Force Communication

Communication systems might provide diagnostic, managerial, counseling, instructional, or support functions. They may enhance communication among healthcare providers or between healthcare providers and patients. The task force members will use various communication methods, such as email, mobile phones, telemedicine, and telecare systems, throughout the project.

CDSSs are automated systems that may be accessed from different devices, including computers and mobile phones. They will aid health workers in making decisions and adhering to clinical standards and treatment pathways once the initiative is implemented.

Information systems, such as web-based resources and eHealth portals, will be created to encourage essential stakeholders’ use of Internet technology to access health-related information (Sutton et al., 2020).

Conclusion

CDSS may help diagnose, treat, and manage care by using patient data, evidence-based recommendations, and best practices. CDSS has shown enhanced patient outcomes by optimizing clinical processes, lowering mortality rates, and supporting evidence-based decision-making.

They may improve clinician satisfaction by providing immediate feedback and decreasing cognitive load. CDSS solutions like Epic software have the opportunity and obligation to enhance patient care by promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion in healthcare delivery.
