The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on the future of nursing characterizes a detailed evaluation of nursing workforce. The recommendations of this report are aimed at supporting the efforts to enhance health of US citizens through the nursing contribution to the health care delivery.

As such, the ultimate goal of this report is enhance patient outcomes and health care for diverse population across the lifespan with nursing as the primary tool needed to realize the that goal. Therefore, as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), the IOM reports from 2010 to 2016 can be used as a framework for transformations in the nursing profession and the health care delivery system (Altman et al., 2016).

Specifically, the report can be used as the key driver of interprofessional collaboration and coordination, provision of quality and affordable care, ensure value-based payment of health care, and guiding of health care system.

Regarding the implementation of the report, the APN should take action to expand opportunities for nurses to lead and spread collaborative improvement endeavors. This can be realized by leading development of patient-centered care and innovative care models, and advocating for educational curricula that enhance collaborative and coordinated care efforts.

The report can also be implemented in the clinical practice settings by adopting nursing care model redesign initiatives, developing nurse managed programs such as wound care and anticoagulation therapy, and leading quality improvement initiatives across departments (Kovner et al., 2018).

APN can also implement the report by taking action to promote nurse residency program, eradicate scope of practice barriers, and ensure incentives to promote lifelong learning in nurses, which is essential in increasing the number of nurses with a baccalaureate degree in the organization.
