Question 11 What are the primary similarities and/or differences between the two countries Haiti and the Philippines?
The Philippines has a total population of around 115 million persons, a life expectancy of 70 years, and under-five mortality of 26 persons per 1000. On the other hand, Haiti has a total population of around 11.5 million, a life expectancy of 66 years, and under-five mortality of 45 children per 1000 (Fene et al., 2020).
However, ischemic heart diseases, cerebrovascular accidents, and pneumonia are the major causes of morbidity and mortality in both countries, where diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, poor nutrition, and obesity are the major risk factors for the two diseases.
In addition, Haiti has around2606physicians, 4424 nurses and midwives, and 786 healthcare facilities, while the Philippines has 88000 nurses, 41000 midwives, 28000physicians, and 26000 healthcare facilities (Bautista et al., 2022).
Lastly, the Haitian government spends 38 dollars per capita, contributing to 3.5% of the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on health, while the Philippines spends 194 USD per capita, contributing to 5.3% of the total GDP on health.
Political instability is the major problem facing Haiti, resulting from the increased number of gangs, violence, and the 2021 presidential assassination.
In contrast, the Philippines is currently in a democratic political environment promoting governance at both national and municipal levels (Cordero, 2022). In addition, Haiti is also currently facing poor housing, working, sanitation, transportation, and food security at the time compared to the Philippines, whose current major problem is the increasing number of natural disasters and climate change.
Communities in Haiti continue to value cultural and religious practices in promoting health and preventing diseases compared to the Philippines, where they value the role of modern medicine but incorporate complementary and traditional medicine (Kharman et al., 2021).
Haiti faces poor nursing care due to poor working conditions, low wages, and limited access to opportunities for educational advancement. Nurses in the Philippines also complain of poor working conditions and low wages but appreciate the role of a regulatory body in standardizing nursing practice and expanding opportunities for their practice.
Lastly, both countries have realized the importance of better healthcare funding and access in promoting healthcare standards for their population.
