Poetry is an art that enables individuals to express their emotions, experiences, aspirations, and regrets from their minds (Joshi et al., 2021). People compose poems using styles and artistic components like rhyme and rhythm that emphasize their dreams, hopes, and even worst experiences like nightmares (Jacobus et al., 2019). The purpose of this essay is to analyze a selected work of poetry and compare it to my creation through reflection to demonstrate its inspiration.

Part 1 Creation

My Dog by Emily Lewis

Have you seen a little dog,
Anywhere about?
A raggy dog, a shaggy dog
Who is always looking out
Which he thinks he ought to do,
He’s very likely, at this minute,
Biting someone’s shoe.
If you see that little dog,
His tail up in the air,
A whirly tail, a curly tail,
A dog who does not care
For any other dog, he meets,
Not even himself,
Then hide your mats
And put your meat on the shelf.
If you see that little dog,
Barking at the cars,
A raggy dog, a shaggy dog,
With eyes like twinkling stars,
Just let me know
For though he’s terrible as wrong can be,
I wouldn’t change that dog
For all the treasures of the sea!

Emily Lewis wrote my inspirational poem which focuses on her puppy and how much she loves and cares for him despite the mistakes that it makes. According to Emily, this poem enabled her to get a trophy while in school. The poem shows the real definition of poetry and the author’s illustration of love and affection for her pet. Through the rhythm and rhymes, Lewis creates imagery for her audience through vivid mental pictures. Jacobus et al. (2019) assert that language image prompts the audience to develop photographs or “see” the subject of discussion and description.

My Best Buddy by Soye

He smiles all the time
Honest and genuine smile
Innocent like an infant
He cheers on and believes everyone
He’s kind-hearted and takes a listening year
Always serving the interests of others, like his own
Loving people, loving people
Love in the air but is it genuine?
Is there correction when you love?
Or turn a blind eye and a deaf ear?
Is that love in a genuine manner?
He loves, yes he loves
He lies, yes he lies
My buddy does not want correction
My buddy loves it without a negative comment
Is that love?
If you see him, know he loves
He frowns when corrected
My buddy, my buddy

My short poem, “MY buddy” is an artistic piece written and produced by myself. My friend, “my buddy” is the subject or title of this poetic work or piece. The poem discusses the characteristics of my friend who loves and is committed to people that love. However, he is hesitant to be corrected. He feels that people should not correct him when he makes a mistake.

The two poems connect since they all address a similar issue, “love” but in different ways. Lewis’s poem is about her dog, a puppy who makes mistakes but she still loves it. My poem is about a friend who loves so much but never wants to be corrected (Siregar, 2022). The two poems demonstrate how deeply people feel about and show love for animals and human beings.

The two pieces use imagery as they create vivid mental pictures of love; for animals by human beings, and human beings by themselves for others. The two poems are also similar in vocabulary as they utilize simple language without tough terms or words (Jusslin et al., 2021). For instance, Lewis calls her dog, “a raggy dog, and a shaggy dog that is always searching out for some fresh mischief which he feels he ought to commit.”

Despite its troublesome nature, she says, “I wouldn’t change that dog for all the treasures of the sea,” to illustrate her affectionate love for the dog. The words in my poem also emphasize love and rhyme, smiling all the time, and being genuine (Alfrey et al., 2021). The medium can influence the audience’s experiences as individuals can interpret poems based on their circumstances or what they are experiencing while analyzing or listening to them.

Conclusion

Poetry provides people with a chance to express their emotions and encounters to inspire and motivate others. The two poems demonstrate similarities based on their themes and style. They all show that love comes from people and is shared for its benefits. The two poems illustrate the core role of artistic work among people and society.
