Show The Handmaid’s Tale

Director Bruce Miller

The Handmaid’s Tale is a TV series aired in 2017 on the Hulu channel. It can be categorized as a screen adaptation based on Margaret Atwood’s book, which was penned in 1985. Speaking of visual culture, there are brilliant shots in the series by Miller (2017), and the subject of the work is authoritarianism analysis and women’s injustice, which is quite provocative. The color choice also shows a vivid theme as the color red of the handmaids’ clothes visually demonstrates an oppressive atmosphere and the fight against it.

After watching the series, viewers are forced to think about persistent modern problems, even as presented in the original 1985 book. The audience receives an enhanced perception of the danger that democracy faces concerning freedom and the continuing issue of sexual equality (Magee, 2018). From another perspective, the oppression of freedom from a society presented in the show somehow touches the political nerve of the present day.

As Miller (2023), the show’s creator, noted, “We’re living in a time where these issues are very present, and it’s a way of holding a mirror up to society,” highlighting the series’ role in fostering critical dialogue and social awareness. Drawing on the experience of totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century and, especially, the works of feminism, The Handmaid’s Tale paints a picture of the contemporary world (Magee, 2018).

Due to the relation of the series to real-life topics, it respects the author’s work. It discusses present movements, strengthening its authority as one of the art masterpieces in the modern TV series.
