This is a systematic review that focuses on the roles and responsibilities of an effective nurse manager. This review used the terms nurse manager and nurse executive interchangeably. Therefore, the roles are discussed as similar or the same. According to the authors, nurse executives should possess effective communication skills that they can then use at every level of the organization. They should also demonstrate ethics awareness and positive leadership. As such, nurse executives play crucial roles in the healthcare environment to support effective and quality patient care services. This article explores the nurse executive’s leadership perception of their own leadership qualities in the context of the American Hospital Association recommended membership requirements for appointment to the executive hospital board. Based on the findings of this research, nurse executives have various roles which support the patient care environment. Some of the roles explored in this article include business management, healthcare administration, and policy, ensuring that the patients are safe in the care environment. Nurse executives also play a critical role in ensuring that the care offered to patients in the clinical environment is safe.
