Paper Instructions
Assessment Description
Learning styles represent the different approaches to learning based on preferences, weaknesses, and strengths. For learners to best achieve the desired educational outcome, learning styles must be considered when creating a plan. Complete “The VARK Questionnaire,” located on the VARK website, and then complete the following;
- Click “OK” to receive your questionnaire scores.
- Once you have determined your preferred learning style, review the corresponding link to view your learning preference.
- Review the other learning styles visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic, and multimodal (listed on the VARK Questionnaire Results page).
- Compare your current preferred learning strategies to the identified strategies for your preferred learning style.
- Examine how awareness of learning styles has influenced your perceptions of teaching and learning.
In a paper (750-1,000 words), summarize your analysis of this exercise and discuss the overall value of learning styles. Include the following;
- Provide a summary of your learning style according the VARK questionnaire.
- Describe your preferred learning strategies. Compare your current preferred learning strategies to the identified strategies for your preferred learning style.
- Describe how individual learning styles affect the degree to which a learner can understand or perform educational activities. Discuss the importance of an educator identifying individual learning styles and preferences when working with learners.
- Discuss why understanding the learning styles of individuals participating in health promotion is important to achieving the desired outcome. How do learning styles ultimately affect the possibility for a behavioral change? How would different learning styles be accommodated in health promotion?

Sample Answer
A learning style refers to the factors, behaviors, and attitudes that facilitate learning for a learner in a particular situation. Mangold et al. (2018) explain that learning styles are routine cognitive and affective behaviors that influence how people interact in learning situations. Learning styles include Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic learners. The purpose of this paper is to describe my learning style and the value of learning styles in the classroom and health promotion.
Personal Learning Styles According to VARK Questionnaire
The VARK questionnaire results revealed that I am a very strong Visual learner. The results were Visual-16; Aural-0; Read/Write-2; Kinesthetic-0. This means that I learn best by reading and converting printed material into symbols.
Preferred Learning Strategies
Being a visual learner means that I process and retain information best from modes of instruction that integrate symbols representing verbal instructions. Indeed, I learn best from incorporating diagrams in my studies, charts, and PowerPoint slides. When studying or revising for exams, I prefer to prepare study plans for various topics, make summaries of notes, color code notes, and make mnemonics. Studying using these visuals helps in understanding relationships between concepts.
Furthermore, when reading a book, I understand concepts better when they are presented in photos and illustrations. For instance, I understand a disease process better when presented in an illustration than when it is only presented with notes or a lecture video. When undertaking the nursing course, I found tables and charts helpful in comparing and contrasting diseases. Thus, I make tables to compare clinical features, pathophysiology, and management of diseases like hypothyroidism vs. hyperthyroidism or COPD vs. asthma.
My preferred learning strategies align with the identified strategies for the visual learning style. According to the VARK questionnaire, the preferences for Visual learners include drawing things, studying using plans, maps, and diagrams, and working using logos, branding, and design. Besides, visual learners prefer tasks where they can identify patterns and written information containing graphs, charts, and diagrams (VARK Learn Limited, 2019).
Visual learners prefer when the layout on a page is different, conspicuous, or unusual, which is often more essential than the content. Furthermore, they prefer to use color and shape, read words, and convert them into their designed diagrams.
Learning Styles
Learning styles influence how learners learn, how instructors teach, and how the two interact. Kadiriye et al. (2022) explain that a learning style is among the various factors that enable learning to occur in the learning process. A learner tends to use one or more of the four learning styles predominantly. Using individual learning styles has been found to improve academic performance, especially in students with low academic success. It also leads to the organization and development of knowledge in a manner that most students can adopt (Amaniyan et al., 2020).
A mismatch between the student’s learning style and the learning method used by the educator leads to reduced interest and desire for the lesson, distraction, a decline in active participation in the lesson, and failure in exams. It is essential for the educator to identify learners’ learning styles and preferences since it fosters harmony between the learning strategies used by the educator and the student’s learning styles. McKenna et al. (2018) assert that understanding learning styles can help educators identify and understand the various learning styles and learning needs of their students.
Besides, it can help eliminate biases against certain learning styles and identify new teaching methods and solutions to increase learning efficiency. Learners possess different skills and abilities. Thus, instead of using one material in the learning process, it is more suitable for the educator to employ different approaches in teaching that match the learners’ learning styles.
Learning Styles and Health Promotion
Learning styles apply not only in the classroom but also in the clinical and community settings during health education and promotion activities. Thus, it is vital for health educators to understand the learning styles of persons participating in health promotion. Understanding the learning styles helps the health educator design the health promotion plan to capture individuals’ interests and increase their ability to retain information (Whitney, 2018).
When the teaching style matches the patient’s or an individual’s preferred learning style, it increases their understanding of the health promotion message, increasing the likelihood of behavior change. When conducting health promotion for a group, it is important to incorporate all the earning styles to stimulate each person’s interest (Whitney, 2018). For example, the educator can use charts, PowerPoint slides, recordings, pamphlets, and demonstrations to meet the needs of all types of learners.
Conclusion
Learning styles are a part of the comprehensive approach that should be considered when facilitating learning. The VARK questionnaire showed that I am a very strong Visual learner. I retain information best when presented in visual images like graphs, charts, concept maps, tables, and graphs. The preferred learning style for a learner is expressed as the style in which one gains skills and expertise by utilizing it more and more over time. Matching learning styles with teaching strategies increase the chances for behavior change.
