Assessment Description
The purpose of this assignment is to develop a professional development plan using innovative education tools to help educate staff on relevant care topics to promote patient wellbeing.
This assignment has indirect care experience requirements. The “Indirect Care Experience Hours” form, found in the Topic 3 Resources, will be used to document the indirect care experience hours completed in Topics 3, 4 and 5. As progress is made on this and subsequent assignments, update this form indicating the date(s) each section is completed. This form will be submitted in Topic 5.
Read the scenario below and then complete Part 1 and Part 2 of the assignment.
Scenario
You are the Chief Informatics Officer (CIO) for a large health system, which includes 11 acute care locations and 25 clinics. As part of your role, which is described in greater detail in the attached “Role of the Chief Informatics Officer” document, you are charged with overseeing the continuing education and professional development using the latest technological advancements.
Your current suite of educational tools is outdated based on the recent innovation sparked by artificial intelligence and machine learning. Your informatics team needs to update the following list of continuing education offerings. Currently, these courses are presented during a live PowerPoint presentation quarterly. However, this year, your goal is to improve the educational experience using the latest innovative technology to address one of the following topics
- Case management basics
- Cultural competency
- Emergency response
- Wound care
- Legal and ethical issues in health care informatics
- Informatic tools to support communication and dissemination (i.e., disease outbreaks, support epidemiology, health disaster planning)
- Informatic tools to support evidence-based practice (EBP)
- Strategies for enhancing patient-centered care with technology
- Data mining to discover patterns and establish relationships
Part 1 Slide Presentation
Create an education plan addressing one of the outcome measure topics utilizing an innovative technology tool from the provided list. Your education plan should include
- Initial assessment Explain how the selected topic impacts patient outcomes.
- Learning objectives What are your objectives for the education plan? The objectives need to be specific, measurable, achievable, and relevant to patient outcomes.
- Instructional methods What methods would be most appropriate for you to use? Which tool(s) from the attached “Tool List for Education Plan” document, would you implement in your education plan? Justify your answer.
- Resources and Support What resources are available to help you? What resources will you need to be successful in your education plan?

Part 2 Video Recording
For Part 2 of this assignment, create a video resource for nursing educators at the facility. Using the presentation created in Part 1, record a 3-5-minute video to present the education plan and tools that will be used to educate staff. Include the link to your video in the speaker notes on your title/introductory slide.
You will be assessed on the following
- Content knowledge
- Presentation skills, including body language, eye contact, evidence of preparation, clear articulation, and adherence to the 5-minute time limit
- Record your video using a free GCU approved tool of your choice, such as Loom, Zoom, or PowerPoint. For additional support creating video presentations, refer to Course Material Support page located in the Student Success Center, which is lined in Course Materials. A resource on using Loom to record a video presentation is listed in the Course Materials as well.
- Title slide and reference slide are not included in the slide count. Include speaker notes below each content-related slide that represent what would be said if giving the presentation in person. Healthcare workers, consultants, health policymakers, and medical researchers are among the professional groups impacted by changing rules, legislation, and ethical standards. The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) has a working committee dedicated to providing continuous education on ethical, legal, and social concerns in health informatics for its members.
Initial assessment
Patients benefit from all ethical principles because they ensure that their autonomy is respected, they receive equitable treatment, and they are provided with the highest quality of care possible following their own beliefs and choices. This allows the patient to fully trust their healthcare practitioner.
Medical care may be intrusive, and if people do not trust that it will provide benefits, they may postpone getting treatment. It is mandatory to maintain patient health information confidentially, ensuring that only those directly involved in the patient’s care have access to the health record and never disclose it to others outside the patient care team (Kleib et al., 2021).
Violating confidentiality incurs significant costs. Consequences such as disciplinary action, litigation, fines, and regulatory body sanctions, such as those from state nursing boards, may be imposed inside the organization (Liaw et al., 2020).

I will create educational content on legal and ethical issues in healthcare informatics in a Microsoft Word document. Then, I will develop a PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes using Google Slides. Finally, I will record my presentation and upload it to YouTube.
All three of the aforementioned tools are user-friendly, provide a variety of formatting choices, facilities for collaboration and sharing, citation and reference capabilities, templates, word and grammar checks, and automatic saving, and are simple to use.

The education plan will be implemented in seven steps over one week. On the third day, participants will create a Word document outlining the content of the educational session. On the fourth day, the focus will be on creating the PowerPoint presentation, followed by recording it as a video presentation on the fifth day for immediate upload to YouTube. Day 6 includes presenting to the target audience, followed by evaluating the success of the educational session on day 7 (O′Connor & LaRue, 2021).
Recruitment, communication, and contingency Plan
I will create various recruitment materials like flyers, text messages, newspaper articles, social media posts, and newsletters to attract students to my educational session. Employing multiple recruitment materials is often effective. I will disseminate information about the education session through emails, text messages, and phone calls to students who express interest.
I intend to impart enthusiasm through recruitment materials and strategies. In the event of difficulties, social support like teams, coaching, and leadership roles can serve as incentives to encourage and sustain involvement (Forman et al., 2019).
After evaluating the program’s effectiveness, adjustments will be made as needed, and the program will be redeployed to maintain its relevance and significance for the participants.
Evaluation
I will use many ways to assess the effectiveness of the educational project. An approach that may be used is Achievement Tests. Evaluating student’s academic performance and development via standardized examinations or evaluations. Monitoring student attendance and tracking dropout rates may provide valuable information about the project’s effect on student involvement and retention (Goodman, 2020).
I will conduct surveys to collect input from students on their experiences and views of the project’s effect. Surveys may evaluate student involvement, contentment, motivation, and the efficacy of educational methods.
Conclusion
Ethical and legal considerations impact whatever facet of the health informatics profession is present. Finding a method to strike a balance between the need to safeguard patient information and the potential for improved care and outcomes resulting from enhanced interoperability and record-sharing capabilities among healthcare organizations is the crux of the matter.
Establishing the health informatics profession is predicated on the belief that neither record-sharing simplicity nor record security should be trade-offs for healthcare providers and patients. This is a broad perspective on the overarching objective of health informatics professionals, whose principal duty is to facilitate the continued secure and efficient integration of electronic medical records within the healthcare sector.
