Sample Answer
Leadership is an essential aspect of nursing and healthcare because of the role that nurses play in care delivery. During the practicum experience, I observed effective leadership from my preceptor and other leaders at the practice site.
My preceptor demonstrated transformational leadership as she kept inspiring and motivating the entire team and nursing students to focus on better patient outcomes. Organizational leaders at the practicum site demonstrate both transformational and servant leadership approaches based on how they handle nurses.
They encouraged them to develop innovative ideas and participate in decisions by involving them (Melnyk et al., 2022). The leaders also prioritized the nurses’ needs and not their interests. Through participatory meetings and encouragement of innovative approaches, the leaders in the practicum facility were influential and impactful in developing teamwork leading to better patient outcomes.
During the practicum experience, I demonstrated servant leadership through consistent communication as a nurse leader. Servant leadership prioritizes the needs of others (Stanley et al., 2022). Therefore, my priority in the practicum site was to focus on patient needs and team members.
I also practiced emotional intelligence and increased self-awareness to manage the diverse emotions I experience and control my reactions based on the situation. For instance, I empathized with patients who required procedures and colleagues who felt overwhelmed by the workload.
I have gained critical leadership skills because of my practicum experience. These include interpersonal skills, conflict resolution abilities, and communication attributes. I have also improved aspects of teamwork and working with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
Areas that need improvement include conflict resolution, interactive abilities with others, and working in teams without losing synergy (Zonneveld et al., 2021). The plan to improve these areas includes seeking feedback from preceptors and colleagues, attending workshops and seminars, and reading widely using content from my practice site and other research materials.
