Sample Answer
The proposed nursing intervention to address falls among elderly patients admitted to nursing homes is fall management and prevention education. This intervention is expected to enhance the awareness and knowledge of elderly patients and healthcare providers in the identification of fall threats and enable timely prevention. After working with my preceptor to assess the organizational policies, a list of numerous measurable outcomes of this EBP project was developed as detailed below.
Reduction in Fall-related Injuries
Patient falls are associated with a high risk of injuries and disabilities. According to MacKay et al., (2021), the successful implementation of this project is expected to empower healthcare providers and nursing homes to prevent falls among elderly patients by using technologies, providing education about fall prevention and patient safety, and removing possible environmental hazards. The project will also help nurses and other healthcare professionals to formulate sound policies and strategies to prevent and manage falls in nursing homes. In turn, the risk of fall-related injuries will be significantly reduced.
Reduction in the Likelihood of Falling
The provision of fall management and prevention education is expected to increase awareness among clinicians (Vaishya & Vaish, 2020). In turn, healthcare providers will apply the knowledge gained to help in reducing the chances of patient falls.
Reduction of Costs Related to Patient Fall Management
Successful implementation of this capstone change project will increase awareness of fall management and prevention. This will reduce the chances of falls which, according to Vaishya & Vaish (2020), is vital in eliminating costs associated with patient falls including treatment of injuries, disabilities, high cost of care, high mortality rates, and longer hospital stay days.
Improved Quality of Life
Successful management and prevention of falls is expected to lead to better patient outcomes including reduction of cost of care, increased patient satisfaction with care, and enhancement of physical and psychological comfort of patients (Heng et al., 2022). As a result, patients will enjoy improved quality of life.
