Inter-professional collaboration is a core aspect of effective delivery of evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions in clinical settings. Throughout the week and based on discussion with my preceptor, there are novel aspects related to inter-professional collaboration in my area of specialty with increased emphasis on reducing hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs). Through inter-professional collaboration, nurses and other providers can work based on a common goal to improve the overall quality of care offered to patients.
Inter-professional collaboration occurs in all areas of healthcare delivery since nurses cannot work alone but require input from other professionals like physicians and therapists (Clarkson et al., 2019). Inter-professional collaboration entails having teams that comprise patients and their families, and specialists based on their area of focus to integrate best approaches and have a common or shared goal of care delivery.
Inter-professional collaboration will be critical in implementing the pressure injury prevention (PIP) strategies aimed at reducing and preventing the occurrence of hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) in critical care unit (Team et al., 2021). These professionals will work together to suggest new approaches from the PIP bundle that are relevant to patients in the unit (Kovach et al., 2022). They will also suggest nurse-based interventions for implementation in the setting to enhance patient outcomes.
Personal strengths while working in inter-professional collaboration teams include inter personal skills, accepting and embracing diversity, and being open to new ideas as well as effective communication. Conversely, my weak areas include making more sacrifices to accommodate colleagues who do not work to produce better approaches to care interventions. Again, additional resources are essential in helping organizations embrace inter-professional collaboration.
These include provision of education and training and an inclusive and diverse workplace environment (Clarkson et al., 2019). Furthermore, developing an organizational culture that values diversity and inclusion is essential in overcoming possible obstacles to inter-professional collaboration.
