Nursing research has been valuable in remaining current with the trends and developments in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) clinical experience and my current practice as a registered nurse in an Emergency Department. My clinical practice has required me to engage in nursing research to improve patient care and outcomes. It has been crucial in helping remain up-to-date with current treatments for various conditions and improving patient care quality.

Research in nursing involves advancing current knowledge about clinical care by constantly developing and assessing new ideas about diseases, procedures, and strategies (Honey et al., 2020). I have observed that nursing research enables FNPs to exchange ideas on issues relating to patient care. Besides, evidence-based practice (EBP) has been a cornerstone of nursing research in my clinical practice.

During my FNP clinical experience, I have heavily relied on research to advance my understanding of and inform developments in patient care. For example, I applied clinical research to identify an evidence-based intervention that can be used to address the issue of Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) through the EBP seven-step approach. The first step was identifying an intervention of interest that would be compared with the current practice and determining the outcome of interest (Cullen et al., 2020).

For instance, the intervention of interest was using 0·1% chlorhexidine solution for meatal cleaning and comparing it with the current practice of using 0·9% normal saline for meatal cleaning. The next step was searching for the best evidence related to the intervention of interest and critically appraising the evidence to establish if the literature identified from the search is relevant and reliable (Cullen et al., 2020).

The evidence from the literature search was then integrated with patient assessments, clinical expertise, outcome data, patient preferences, and values. After the implementing the intervention of interest,, the outcomes werewere evaluated, and the EBP results were disseminated.

We conducted a clinical trial to test the two interventions and determine their effectiveness in reducing CAUTI. We specifically employed a randomized control trial to compare the effectiveness of two interventions. The clinical trial showed that 0·1% chlorhexidine solution was superior to 0·9% normal saline in reducing CAUTI rates. The results of the clinical trial generated knowledge on strategies to implement to reduce CAUTI and guided clinical practice.
