The clinical question should be written using the intervention format In elderly patients (P), how does the implementation of a fall risk protocol (I) compared to none (C), affect the number of falls (O) within hospitalization (T)?

Use your clinical question to create keywords and complete a literature search using the Galen library database. Start early in the week so that you can contact the Galen librarian for guidance on searching the databases as needed. The librarians are available online via live chat or by placing a support ticket.

Find and save full text (PDF) of 3 research articles (primary or secondary research studies based on high levels of evidence) dated within the past 5 years. Do not use lower levels of evidence articles such as quality improvement project, scoping review, literature review or integrative review.

Select articles that show your nursing intervention is effective in achieving your desired outcome stated in your clinical question. For example, if you plan to implement yoga as a nursing intervention to enhance weight loss, all 3 studies must find (reported under the results/findings section) that yoga is an effective weight-loss strategy.

If you cannot find studies to support your intervention and outcome, consider the need to edit your intervention and outcome within the clinical question. Then, repeat the literature search using the revised keywords.

Use a total of 4 sources, including the 3 research articles and the assigned course textbook.

  • Use 1 to 2 short, direct quotes and multiple paraphrases as supportive evidence throughout the paper with in-text citations and matching references formatted in APA style.
  • Each short, direct quote should contain less than 20 words.
  • Each paragraph should contain a minimum of 4 sentences and a maximum of 6 to 8 sentences.
  • Complete a 4-page APA formatted paper (excluding the title and reference pages) to include the following

Introduction (1 paragraph)

  • Use the selected articles as sources as you
  • Identify and introduce a nurse-related topic of interest.
  • Describe your interest in the topic.
  • Include a purpose statement.

Clinical Question (1 sentence)

Discuss one reason why this topic should be investigated and provide an in-text citation to support your claim for the reason.

Findings (3 paragraphs)

Paraphrase the 3 research articles with in-text citations to report a summary of the findings. Do not use direct quotes. Summarize each article in one paragraph by identifying the

Type of study (for example quantitative or qualitative) or specific research design if stated (for example systematic review or randomized controlled trial).

Purpose of the study.

Description of the sample (describe the sample characteristics and state the number of participants).

  • Methods (describe the data collection and data analysis procedures)
  • Results (Explain the findings and include statistical significance such as p value or numerical data for quantitative results and themes/concepts for qualitative results).
  • State how the study findings support the nursing intervention in your clinical question.

Recommendations (1 paragraph)

Based on your findings, use evidence with in-text citations from the research findings to discuss two recommendations for improving clinical practice (bedside and patient care). Support each recommendation with evidence.

Conclusions (1 paragraph)

Provide a concise summary of the evidence on the topic and state how the evidence you found support your clinical question. Do not include new information.

Submission

Adhere to page limit and utilize available resources as needed including Grammarly, Academic Writer, and Brainfuse Tutoring Services.

Evidence Paper

The identified nurse-related topic of interest for this assignment is high work-related stress levels among nurses. The issue is a current worldwide challenge faced in the nursing profession. Nursing is one of the most demanding professions, with nurses being exposed nurses to multiple work-related factors that increase their risk of developing stress.

My interest in this topic is to identify an evidence-based intervention that can help address work-related stress among nurses. The purpose of this paper is to discuss findings from the literature review of an intervention that can decrease nurses’ work-related stress levels.

Clinical Question

Among nurses (P), does Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (I), compared to no intervention (C), decrease work-related stress levels by 50% (O) within six months (T)?

Justification

The topic of high stress levels among nurses should be investigated since stress contributes to nurses’ absenteeism, intention to leave, and high turnover. High stress levels contribute to the development of various mental health disorders like Anxiety disorders, depression, and sleeping disorders (Boren & Veksler, 2023).

It also contributes to accidents in patient care, poor work performance, errors of judgment, and a negative attitude at work, affecting patient care quality. Statistics show that nurses suffer from more adverse mental health problems than other professionals in healthcare.

Boren and Veksler (2023) found the causes of nurses’ stress to include high workloads, emotional cost of caring, constant interactions with suffering and dying patients, lack of reward and shift rotation, lack of support, complex interpersonal relationships, organizational conflict, and workplace violence.

Identifying and implementing interventions that can help nurses mitigate or address occupational stress effectively can help improve their mental health and well-being as well as lower turnover rates, which contribute to acute nursing shortage.

Findings

Bossi et al. (2022) examined the efficacy of an online mindfulness intervention on healthy employees using a randomized control trial (RCT). The sample included 69 participants in the experimental group and 63 in the control group who were employees in a large-scale banking group.

Employees in the experimental group undertook an 8-week mindfulness online training program founded on the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) protocol, while no intervention was provided to the control group.

Data was collected through weekly surveys using online questionnaires to assess the participants’ habits, mindfulness, emotion regulation, positive and negative affect, depression, anxiety, stress, resilience, and insomnia (Bossi et al., 2022). The findings revealed significant differences between the experimental and the control groups in mindfulness, positive affect, depression, and insomnia.

Participants in the experimental group showed an increase in psychological well-being and a reduction in perceived stress compared to the control group. The findings support my PICOT intervention as they establish that mindfulness interventions are effective in reducing occupational stress.

Kriakous et al. (2020) carried out a systematic review of quantitative studies that comprised RCTs, clinical controlled trials, and pre-post designs. The study sought to increase awareness of the effectiveness of Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in enhancing the psychological functioning of healthcare professionals (HCPs).

The researchers included 30 studies that used qualified HCPs as participants. The Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies (QATQS) was used to assess the quality of the selected articles. The systematic review findings revealed that MBSR was effective in alleviating anxiety, depression, and stress among HCPs and increased their mindfulness and self-compassion levels (Kriakous et al., 2020).

The article supports my proposed intervention as it establishes that Mindfulness intervention is effective in improving health providers’ stress levels and mental health. Wang et al. (2023) conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the impact of mindfulness training on nurse’s performance.

The study reviewed 15 articles comprising a total of 1,165 randomized participants. Data analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.4 software. The results showed that mindfulness training was effective in decreasing burnout, as evidenced by lower scores for emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and higher scores for personal accomplishment.

Besides, the training led to a sustained short-term improvement in stress levels with delayed benefits for burnout. The article relates to my intervention as it establishes that mindfulness-based interventions like training are viable for enhancing nurses’ psychological well-being and reducing stress and burnout.

Recommendations

The findings from the three peer-reviewed articles establish that mindfulness interventions are effective in improving nurses’ mental health and well-being by alleviating stress, anxiety, and depression. Besides, mindfulness interventions lower burnout, which is a major contributor to stress and high turnover.

My first recommendation is to offer nurses Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy programs, which will significantly reduce occupational stress and improve psychological functioning (Bossi et al., 2022).

In addition to providing MBCT, I recommend training nurses on mindfulness meditation to increase their mindfulness. Mindfulness meditation involves focusing one’s attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally, to the unfolding of experience (Wang et al., 2023).

Kriakous et al. (2020) explain that mindfulness meditation can help alleviate occupational stress, improve quality of life, and increase self-compassion among nurses. Mindfulness meditation can be an effective measure for preventing and managing workplace stress and burnout among nurses.

Conclusion

High occupational stress levels are a major concern that needs to be addressed as they contribute to mental health problems and high nursing turnover. Personal, patient-related, and organizational factors cause high occupational stress levels. Evidence from the literature shows that mindfulness interventions are effective in reducing occupational stress and improving scores on stress, anxiety, and depression among employees, including healthcare providers.

Mindfulness interventions increase employees’ psychological well-being and reduce perceived stress. Thus, the evidence supports my proposed interventions of providing Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy to nurses to decrease their stress levels. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy programs and training on mindfulness meditation can be established in healthcare organizations to improve healthcare professionals’ psychological well-being and productivity.
