Heart Disease is one of the most common chronic health conditions affecting European Americans. Hypertension has been identified as the major cause of heart disease amongst the population.

Hypertension causes increased resistance to outflow from the left ventricle, which results in hypertrophy of ventricular cardiac muscle, which causes them to narrow.

As a result, the ventricular volume capacity is reduced, causing reduced ejection fraction and filling volumes. The resultant heart failure is referred to as hypertensive heart disease (HHD).

Thus, patients with HHD often experience episodes of dyspnea, peripheral edema, and syncope. The article describes that older age, overweight, physical inactivity, excess dietary salt intake, smoking, alcohol intake, and diabetes mellitus also increase the risk of HHD amongst European hypertensive patients.

In addition, hypertension has also been associated with an increased risk of stroke, kidney disease, pulmonary edema, and vision problems. Atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, kidney disease, heart valve diseases, aortic dissection, intramural hematoma, and aortic ulcers have also been prevalent among Caucasians living with HHD.

Multiple factors have been associated with an increased risk of developing HHD among hypertensive patients, including reduced access to healthcare services, increased health system strain, and hospital avoidance. In addition, poor insurance coverage, patient education, and follow-up have also increased the prevalence.

Lastly, the article recommends several therapies and diagnostic procedures that can be used in the diagnosis and management of the disease not only in European Americans but also in all populations affected.
