The major takeaway from this course was learning about and engaging in policy advocacy. I wrote to our State Senator requesting her to support a pending bill that would improve health outcomes in the general population.

This was an educative experience as I learned how I can take part in the policy-making process by approaching legislators and convincing them to support proposed bills or proposing changes to new or existing bills.

Approaching an elected legislator was an effective way to advocate for policy changes during this course. I realized that legislators respect healthcare professionals for their knowledge of healthcare issues. The aspect of this course that helped me achieve this was learning about advocacy for vulnerable populations.

One of the course student learning outcomes (CSLO) was to incorporate best practices and the most current evidence when using clinical reasoning to make practice decisions. I achieved this outcome by identifying clinical problems that could benefit from a change in practice.

I then searched for current evidence and identified the most practical and cost-effective measure that would improve the clinical problem. I could apply the CSLO in my future practice by searching for current evidence when making clinical decisions that involve patient care and healthcare delivery.

Besides I could use current evidence to improve clinical practice and identify better ways to improve outcomes in my patients. I will apply the knowledge from this course to my practice and nursing career to advocate for policies to improve healthcare access and delivery. I will also engage in research to identify the best evidence to improve the quality and safety of patient care.
